What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone where it provides a solid structure to support a tooth restoration. With a single crown, you can close a gap left by a missing tooth. With multiple implants, you could also have a bridge restoration or support a full arch of teeth. The final result is a sturdy and reliable restoration that will look, feel and function as a natural tooth. The implant can last a lifetime with the right care, and it will allow you to eat, speak and smile with complete confidence. No more worrying about a gap in your smile, or worrying that poorly-fitting dentures could slip.

The dental implant procedure

The procedure takes place in multiple steps, usually spread out over a number of months. We place the implant screw into the jaw bone and then leave this to heal. The bone heals around the implant, creating a solid foundation. Once this has healed, we expose the top of the implant to attach a healing abutment, and finally, we can complete the restoration with a crown, bridge or full arch fixed denture.

Who is right for dental implants?

To be a good candidate for dental implants you would need to have good overall oral health with no presence of gum disease. If gum disease is present, you would need to get this under control before starting treatment due to the risk of peri-implantitis. You would also need to be a non-smoker, as smoking increases the risk of implant rejection. Finally, you need sufficient bone density to support the dental implants.

The treatment journey

Every patient journey is unique, but this is what you can expect when you start treatment with the Longfellow Road Dental Practice.

Initial consultation

Your initial consultation is a chance to ask questions about the treatment and find out if you could be a suitable candidate. We will carry out an examination and relevant scans which may be used to inform the treatment plan if you move forward.

Treatment begins

Timelines can vary depending on healing speed, but we will give you a rough estimate of what you can expect. Every patient journey will be unique, as some will start with bone grafts while others will start with extractions.

Smile with confidence

Once your implants are placed and fully healed, we’ll complete the restoration with a crown, bridge or denture that will enable you to smile with confidence again. You’ll have access to excellent aftercare support to ensure your implants can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have a question about your dental treatment? We've answered the most common questions below.

Different implant treatment plans are available to address different needs. We offer single crown implants and bridge implants that support a single crown or multiple crowns supported by a natural tooth. We also offer All On 4 treatment, which uses longer implants placed at an angle to achieve a full arch restoration, even with low bone density.

With All On 4 implants, we can place a load bearing implant on the same day, but with traditional dental implants, you can expect to wait for around 6-12 weeks between procedures for the area to heal. The actual procedure takes around 3 hours.

This all depends on your own healing journey. You can expect some swelling and tenderness for a few weeks after treatment, but you will soon be back on track and able to enjoy a wide variety of foods again.

The implant portion is designed to last a lifetime, provided you follow aftercare advice. The crown, bridge or denture may need to be replaced every 10 years or so due to wear and tear.

The dentist I saw today was amazing. Very patient with me as i was very anxious for a tooth extraction. When after the extraction I had a spell of sickness and fainting, my dentist along with the dental nurses were fab at looking after me and reassuring me after an embarrassing experience. They didn’t make me feel like a burden and gave me as much time as i needed to collect myself.

Dr Chetan was amazing, friendly and very confident, he gave me lots of options when I’d been to my dentist for many years and they couldn’t really give me any confidence but Dr Chetan gave me 4 options. My family are all seeing him and have always spoken highly of him. I will be having my treatment and will be in touch soon.

I came in yesterday for an extraction, and the dentist was amazing. He made sure everything went smoothly. A big thank you to him for his professionalism, his kindness, and his patience. A special mention to the wonderful nurse who held my hand, it brought me so much comfort, and I’m truly grateful to her. Every time I come to this practise all the team are polite and courteous. The place is always clean and tidy. It’s always a busy practise. Today after waiting 45 mins after my appointment I had to go to the receptionist to enquire what was happening. It got sorted and she was very apologetic. Within 5 minutes I got to go through. Again the Dentist was polite, friendly and efficient. I would highly recommend this practise.
