Dental implants explained

If you’re looking for a permanent solution for missing teeth in the Nuneaton area, consider dental implant treatment with Longfellow Road Dental. This multi-step treatment plan allows us to fully restore your smile with a crown, bridge or full implant supported denture. The implant part of the restoration is a small titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone. This fuses with the bone, creating a strong support for the restoration. Since the implant keeps your jaw bone functioning, it helps to prevent a loss of bone density that could change the shape of your face. It also puts all food items back on the menu, so you’ll be able to chew with confidence.

How does treatment work?

Your dental implant procedure will take place over multiple visits, usually spanning a few months. We start by placing the implant in the jaw bone and leaving this to heal and bond with the bone. Next, we place a healing abutment on top of the implant before placing the final crown. Implants may also be used to support a bridge or a full arch.

Who is a good candidate for treatment?

You’ll need to have good overall oral health to be a good candidate for dental implant treatment. This is because problems like gum disease can lead to implant failure. You’ll also need to be a non-smoker, and commit to not start smoking after treatment, as this can impact implant success rates. Bone density is another factor we’ll need to consider.

The treatment journey

Every patient journey is unique, but this is what you can expect when you start treatment with the Longfellow Road Dental Practice.

Initial consultation

Your initial consultation is a chance to ask questions about the treatment and find out if you could be a suitable candidate. We will carry out an examination and relevant scans which may be used to inform the treatment plan if you move forward.

Treatment begins

Timelines can vary depending on healing speed, but we will give you a rough estimate of what you can expect. Every patient journey will be unique, as some will start with bone grafts while others will start with extractions.

Smile with confidence

Once your implants are placed and fully healed, we’ll complete the restoration with a crown, bridge or denture that will enable you to smile with confidence again. You’ll have access to excellent aftercare support to ensure your implants can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have a question about your dental treatment? We've answered the most common questions below.

Yes, dental implants can replace a full arch of teeth. We can use 4-6 short implants to support a fixed or removable denture. We can also use longer implants placed at an angle to place a load-bearing implant on the same day, which is known as All-On-4.

Treatment usually takes around 3-9 months from start to finish. Things that can make the treatment longer include the need for bone grafting and slower healing times. Multiple implants may also take longer to heal.

You’ll need to brush carefully around the implant and use interdental brushes to prevent bacteria build-up. Regular dental hygiene treatments will also help.

The implant part is designed to last a lifetime, while the crown may need to be replaced or repaired after around 10 years.

I saw Asefa Ahmed for the first time today and she is an excellent dentist. After a bad experience at my previous dentist, Asefa has retored my faith in dentists and provided me with honest options for my teeth. she is friendly, knowledgeable and an excellent practitioner.

This is my first ever doctor visit after coming to Coventry as a student, and I had an appointment with Dr Asefa Ahmed following a NHS 111 service call, it was indeed a great 15 mins as she made me feel comfortable instantly, I explained to her my dentist and dental appointments phobia, but she made sure I felt comfortable and at ease through and through. Everything was done so perfectly and calmly, although it was a 15-20 min consultation and do have a future Appointment with her, I'm glad I got her and her nurse Naz. I'm looking forward to the next appointment with her.
