What are dental implants?

The dental implant procedure allows us to conceal gaps in your smile in the most natural-looking way possible. The finished result will look and feel like a real tooth, so you can smile, chew and speak with confidence. A dental implant is considered to be a permanent solution for missing teeth. Implants can replace single teeth or multiple teeth. They can also be used to support an entire arch restoration. Once placed, the implant can last a lifetime with the right care. Those with dental implants enjoy a more youthful appearance and the implant may help to maintain the bone structure by preventing bone loss.

The dental implant procedure

The dental implant procedure takes place in multiple parts, often spread out over months. The procedure starts with extractions, if required. The implant is then placed in the jaw where it fuses with the bone. Once this has healed, an abutment is placed on top of the implant to support a crown, bridge or full denture. Once completed, the implant will look and feel like a real tooth, and you will simply care for it as you would with your natural teeth.

Who is right for dental implants?

The ideal candidate for dental implants would be someone with one or more missing teeth. This could be the result of trauma or decay. You should have overall good oral health and have no signs of gum disease. You will also need to be a non-smoker, as smoking increases the risk of complications by slowing down the healing process. You would also be unsuitable for treatment if you have had radiotherapy in your jaw, or if you have uncontrolled diabetes. We will discuss all of these limitations with you during your dental implant consultation.

The treatment journey

Every patient journey is unique, but this is what you can expect when you start treatment with the Longfellow Road Dental Practice.

Initial consultation

During your initial consultation, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the treatment and decide if this is the right choice for you. We will carry out a comprehensive examination to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Treatment begins

We'll give you a full treatment plan with expected timelines, but the nature of the procedure means that this may be subject to change. For example, if your implants take longer to heal, this can lengthen the treatment time.

Smile with confidence

Once your implants are healed, it's time to place your crown, bridge or denture so you can smile with confidence again. We'll give you plenty of advice and support to help you care for your dental implants after the procedure is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have a question about your dental treatment? We've answered the most common questions below.

There are different types of implants available, depending on the problem you would like to address. Single dental implants can support one or multiple teeth to close gaps in your smile and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting. All On 4 dental implants use 4-6 implants to support and entire restoration. And finally, same day dental implants use longer implants secured to the cheek bone to allow the restoration to be completed in one day.

Same day dental implants can be completed in just one visit, but other dental implants will take longer. Your treatment time will all depend on how long it takes for the implant to heal. Implants typically take between 6-12 weeks to heal. The actual procedure only around 3 hours to complete.

Many patients report that their dental implant procedure is similar to an extraction in terms of recovery times. You might have some swelling and tenderness for a few days after the treatment, but this should quickly subside.

The dental implant part should last a lifetime with the correct care, but the crown, bridge or denture may need to be replaced or repaired over time. It should last around 10 years or more, with the right care.

Friendly Dentist and no pushing for unnecessary treatments which was a relief from my previous Dentist. Nice friendly reception staff. Generally a good practice for anxious people as many of the reviews suggest. Accommodated a downstairs room for my check up as I'm currently on crutches - side note to this is that the practice is not disability friendly aside from that 1 downstairs consultation room (all other rooms are up a steep set of stairs and I was advised there is no lift). There is no parking and very uneven paving at the front which is a hazard for anyone with mobility difficulties. Practice is on a red route and double yellows so you have to walk from a nearby road (if dropped off there is an enormous pothole which damaged the car of the person who gave me a lift who'd tried to drop me off as close as possible) and the front door is not powered - it is a very heavy fire door meaning you struggle to push or pull with a stick/crutches or if you were in a wheelchair and want to remain independent - I struggled on the way in and the way out and noone was around to ask to help as the reception is some distance from the door. Only other comment was that the treatment room door was randomly opened and propped open during my check up and this wasn't explained or warned... I presumed it was an x-ray protocol but meant the room full of waiting patients all sat there and stared at me with things sticking out of my mouth which made me feel quite uncomfortable (especially when I was already very nervous to be there in the first place!).

Came into the Dentist to book an appointment for a check up, the receptionist said there was a slot at 3,20pm the same day, I was seen the same day and received a professional service.

This was an appointment to check a dental abcess that turned out not to be an abcess but ulceration caused by my partial denture rubbing my gum. Dr Belim gave me good advice and told me how to treat the problem and said he would see me in a month's time. I was seen promptly and the whole experience was a pleasant one.
