Who can access NHS dental care?

NHS treatment is available to everyone, even if you are also registered as a private patient. You will need to pay the subsidised NHS treatment band fee for your treatment, unless you are eligible for free NHS care. You’ll be able to access free care in the following situations:

If you are under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education
If you are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
If you are being treated in an NHS hospital and the treatment is carried out by the hospital dentist
If you are in receipt of certain low income benefits, or if you are under 12 and a dependent of someone on low income benefits

Band One

£27.40

This covers an examination, diagnosis (e.g. x-rays) advice on how to prevent future problems, and a scale and polish if needed. Urgent treatment, when you need to see a dentist immediately, also costs £23.80.

Band Two

£75.30

This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth.

Band Three

£326.70

This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures or bridges.

The cost for an NHS dental check up is covered by Band 1 treatment. It may be free if you meet certain criteria.
