What are denture retained implants?

Implant retained dentures use dental implants placed in the jaw to support a full arch restoration. This is ideal if you are struggling with dentures slipping or causing pressure sores on your gums. With implant retained dentures, the force of your bite is distributed through your jaw bone instead of your gums, so they are much more comfortable to wear and feel much more like natural teeth. This can also help to prevent bone loss and maintain your facial structure. Choose between snap on and permanent dentures for complete flexibility. Wearing implant retained dentures also means that no food will be off limits.

The procedure

This process requires two procedures. During the first procedure, we start by placing the dental implants in your jaw and then leaving these to heal and integrate with the bone. After a period of healing, usually around 8-12 weeks, we will then attach abutments to the dental implants to create the anchor for your denture. You can choose between snap on removable dentures, or a permanently fixed denture. Once completed, you will care for your dentures like they are your natural teeth.

Who is right for dental implants?

The ideal candidate for dental implants has good oral health and sufficient bone density to support the implants. You should also be a non-smoker, as smoking can increase the risk of implant failure. Certain health conditions may also rule you out as a candidate, but we can discuss this during your initial consultation.

Have a question about your dental treatment? We've answered the most common questions below.

A suitable candidate for implant retained dentures is someone who has lost most or all of their teeth and wants a more secure and stable option than traditional dentures. They should have healthy gums and bones, and be willing to commit to regular dental visits for maintenance. smokers are generally not considered good candidates for this type of procedure.

Yes, you can sleep in your implant retained dentures. However, it is important to clean them thoroughly before going to bed and to brush your teeth after waking up to remove any plaque or bacteria that may have accumulated overnight.

Yes, implant retained dentures are removable. However, they should only be removed by a qualified dental professional. You may also choose snap on removable dentures that you can take out at home and clean as you would with a normal denture.

The number of implants you will need for your dentures will depend on the type of denture you choose and the condition of your jawbone. Your dental professional will be able to advise you on the best option for you. We typically use 4-6 per arch to provide a stable foundation for dentures.

We visited Longfellow Dental today with our son Noah, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment we walked in, the reception team was warm, attentive, and made him feel completely at ease. A special mention to Rhiannon and her colleague (who kindly gave him a sticker and balloons while leaving).Dr. Gopi was fantastic, very patient, gentle, and interactive, which made a huge difference. His assistant was also very warm and kind, and gave him a sticker, which he absolutely loved.Honestly, the entire team came across as amazing humans, more of what this world needs. The little touches made him feel really special and turned the whole visit into a positive and fun experience. We’re very grateful and would highly recommend Longfellow Dental to any parents looking for a child-friendly dental clinic.

I'd highly recommend Dr Andrew Leering. After not going to a dentist for several years due to fear, I went to Andrew and he wasn't judgemental at all and made me feel at ease. Been with him now for a few years and my teeth and gums are in great condition.
